Pacific Wave and MANRS

Pacific Wave is committed to supporting the principles behind the Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS) initiative. As part of this support, and funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation, Pacific Wave is implementing a route server on the exchange. We invite you to participate by peering with the route server.

A route server is a mechanism to facilitate peering across an Internet exchange like Pacific Wave. As an alternative to forming a bilateral peering with each network on the exchange, participating networks can choose to announce their prefixes to the route server, which will then re-advertise them to the other participants including the ability for participants to selectively advertise to other networks. CENIC and PNWGP have already established peerings with the route server.

Pacific Wave plans to continue to develop the route server project and welcomes collaboration with participants. In 2023, a looking glass will be added to provide visibility into the use of the exchange and to help participants troubleshoot issues with any announcements. Also in 2023, Pacific Wave will use the route servers to investigate methods of detecting BGP prefix hijacking. Participation from multiple exchange members is critical to the success of these efforts.

How to Participate

Pacific Wave participants are invited to collaborate with Pacific Wave by peering with the route servers. To join, please send an e-mail to noc@pacificwave.net with the following information:

  1. A point of contact at your organization for issues related to the route server project and confirmation of your Network Operations Center (NOC) email.

  2. Your autonomous system number (ASN)

  3. An AS-SET that can be queried through an Internet routing registry to be used for filtering, as required by the MANRS standard for Internet exchanges.

Pacific Wave will configure peering on the route server based on the documented IP addresses for your ASN across all of the public VLANs your network is participating on.
